I am a very passive listener of songs. In the sense that I never pay attention to the lyrics. Not that I don't want to. But I just don't (manufacturing defect).
So on those rare occasions when I actually listen to the lyrics by some luck, I get stunned sometimes. And mostly I find that's when Vairamuthu has penned the lyrics.
(Ok frankly, I cant differentiate Vairamuthu from Vaali or anybody else. But just thought that last sentence will make me look intellectually more adequate.)
This is a listing of some immortal lines from Tamil film music that have attracted me.
Usure Pogudhey (Raavanan)
This has been my most recent favorite. When I heard the song the first time, kinda understood the chichuvaesun. Rahman's music was a perfect fit to it. And the lyrics were even better! Especially the lines:
Amazing fit to the scene. The words of consolation one tells oneself when he knows he is doing something not-so-right. Top class!
Nenjukkul Peidhidum (Vaaranam Aayiram)
Am sure you would have guessed the lines am about to quote.
What concept ma!
Kadhal Vandhaal Solli Anuppu (Iyarkai)
Lilting music, and very contextual lyrics set this song apart. There are a couple of lines that I love the most:
Ilaya Nila Pozhigiradhey (Payanangal Mudivadhillai)
This is an evergreen song that has takers everywhere. SPB's golden voice makes the song an irresistible ear-worm every single time!
Sakka!
Sangeetha Jaadhimullai (Kadhal Oviyam)
This movie is entirely made up of gems. Every time I hear this song particularly, I wish I had learnt carnatic music!
Naetru Illaadha Maatram (Pudhiya Mugam)
One of those ARR classics which make you wonder why his music sounds so different these days (pre and post-VTV)!
Pachai Nirame (Alaipayuthey)
He he.. Indha paattu illaama epdinga? Tops the list of my all time favorites. Vandhu patthu varusham aachu. Innikkum every single time this song is played, I drown myself in the meejic. This song can be a text book / reference for lyricists / music directors / cinematographers / what not! It's a perfect coming together of highly skilled technicians.
While all color references are enthralling, I particularly love the ones to Red:
Thozhiya En Kadhaliya (Kadhalil Vizhundhen)
The lyrics to this song are not very classy or sophisticated. They are simple, and make total sense to someone who has been in that stage!! :)
(Though I should confess, நாக்க முக்க came a close second to this song!)
Nenjil jil jil (Kannathil Muthamittaal)
This is one hell of an emotional package. The lyricist has gone all out in establishing the dichotomy in the mind of the parent. Marvellous, machi!
Sir-ku oru award parcelllll..
Kannae Kalaimaanae (Moondram Pirai)
I watched this movie only a year back. And duly fell in love with Balu Mahendra's style of cinematography. Not too big a fan of his style of direction - I find it very depressing. But his cinematography was top-class! incredible, the way he created magic with the technologies of the 80's! On to the lyrics..
Senthaazham Poovil (Mullum Malarum)
Had always liked this song for the tune. One of the standard parts of the numerous kachheris we subjected IIMB to in the past year. Lyrics-a ippo recent-aa than gavanichen. Arumai! The whole song is a metaphor, as in looking at nature as a lady (as against the usual beaten path of looking at ladies as nature).
Mandram Vandha (Mouna Raagam)
IMHO, MR is the type of movie that Mani Ratnam should stick to. Mandram vandha is a jewel from this movie. Be it the voice.. the visuals.. or the lyrics..
So that's the list from the top of my mind. There are scores more of such songs/lyrics, but these are some that sprang immediately.
And surprisingly what do I find?
7 of these 12 songs are by Vairamuthu!!
2 each by Thamarai and Kannadaasan.. And 1 by Wall-e..
I still can't differentiate Vairamuthu from the rest, but I have newfound respect for him! (Not that he would care)
Anyway, off the screen, my favorite tamil poets are 3 of my friends!
Am a big fan of his!
The other two are Neo and Kalai (if you are still visiting, give me your blog URL da!).
Keep writing folks!

I also love 'Mannipaaya' from VTV, one of those rare occasions where the girl apologises to the guy.. and the way in which thamarai has imbibed a thirukkural 'anbilaar ellam thamakkuriyar..' into the song and ARR has retained it with its essence in the composition is most ingenious!
neat! 83.33% of the songs in this list are my personal favorites. am trying to think what other gems i like, and am blank. cha!
After Vairamuthu & Thamarai, I like Na.Muthukumar too. I dont like Vaali for movie song lyrics, but his works in vikatan used to be super good.
Nice list... most of my favorites too. Btw, you missed the "Thenmerku Paruva kaatru" which has great lyrics as well!
Hi Vishy,
Just chanced upon from somewhere while wandering the net.. your songs list are almost matching my all time favourites..
I would like to add two more which are:
"andhi malai poligirathu" from Raajaparvai. Cant convey a blind man's emotion for a girl, better than this.. if you have not heard it, please try it out.
The next one is "idhu oru ponn malai pozhudu" from Nizhalgal. Maestero Illayaraj at his best.
Guess both are from Vairamuthu.
cheers
venkat

what a collection dude!!!..:)
Thanks Thakkudu saar! :)
My kinda post :-)
I always, always listen to the lyrics - helps me immerse myself in that song sooner.
I have got a doubt(!). Yes I do. In the Netru Illadha Maatram song and especially at those lines. I've had it for a long time but you posting the very same has given me a way to get clarification!
OK the first line means, 'Kavidhai variyin suvai' ceases when 'artham puridhal' happens. Right? Same case with the second.
Following this, the third says 'Kaadhal suvai' ceases when 'Kaatru veesudhal' happens ?!?!
Why isn't it
Kaadhal suvai ondru thaane kaatru nirkum varai ?
Nitpicky? Maybe. But someone help!! What have I got wrong?
@girl of destiny..
I wish I could 'immerse myself in the song' with the lyrics, the way you do!
And whattay doubtu!! You had me racking my miniscule grey cells for this..
Maybe he meant "uyir moochu" when he said "kaatru"? As in, "you can love only as long as you live.. so better give in to love" types?? (he he.. over analysis o?)
Or wait.. he says "ondru thane".. meaning this is the only case where it happens the other way.. in this light, what he has written seems right na?
@Vishy : Aahha.. idhu thaan unmayaana Kavidhai Kavidhai.. Padi!:)
@ramanan..
:)
unna than da edhir paathutu irundhen.. pls clear girl-of-destiny's doubt!!
@Vishy @girl of destiny
Atleast u debate over d 3rd line..
first line laye enakku doubt..
Artham purinja thaane suvai.. illaya ? :)
And ur blog looks way better now ..:)
Thanks to blogger team :)
Artham purinja thaane suvai.. illaya ? :)"
This is something I too have wondered about earlier. And my logic is this: Based on my personal experience, every time I read a kavidhai, it's interesting the first time. Usually because of the karutthu / word-play / whatever. Typically a poem attracts me if there is something new about it. But once I have read, understood and appreciated it, it becomes old stuff. The next time I read the same kavidhai, it has very little impact on me!
Basically, artham puriyum varai suvai/suvaiyin edhirpaarpu.. purindhu rasittha pin, no more suvai..
And thanks for the compliments on the look of the blog da! :) Still not final though.. the header is a stop-gap arrangement.. want to create my own header.. Plus planning a few more minor tweaks..
Will take a week or so to complete all tinkering! :)
I still feel wordpress is better when it comes to themes, but the new template designer in blogger is great.. makes the experience much better/customizable!
Hi,
I have been redirected by wiki when i searched about yelagiri. Nice blog dude. And have to thank u for ramanan link.
good one.
keep writing..
@கார்க்கி..
Thanks for coming, and for your nice words :) hope you do return..
And am not surprised you liked Ramanaa's work :) he has a flair!
#கவிதை வரியின் சுவை - Three Quarters Accepted...But still I feel few poems gives diff meanings at diff parts of your life...No better example than Thirukural..:)
#Blog - Yeah.. But dono why i tried a few but atlast settled with same old "Black Minima".. Jus like ur puppy love :)
@கார்க்கி : Thanks Dude :)
@Vishy : Konjam Overa iruke...Ramanaa - The poet a? Jus seeing... Five much a illa?:) Pl change ....
@Vishy
Good job explaining in a way to confuse me further ;-)
If kaatru was the uyir moochu, then will he use ''veesum' as a verb there?
I thought he used 'Ondru thaane' since, the other two come to a stop somehow; But kadhal never does since the wind never does stop blowing.
Since this was my reasoning, I expected Kaatru nirkum varai (which never happens!)...
@ரமணன்..
I go with Vishy on this one. The elusive, deeper and subtle meaning behind a kavidhai makes a kavidhai, a kavidhai. If the meaning is clear, it becomes prose!
//he elusive, deeper and subtle meaning behind a kavidhai makes a kavidhai, a kavidhai. If the meaning is clear, it becomes prose!//
*AGREED* :)
I do visit your blogs thala..
I'm honoured to know tat u acknowledge me as a poet.. here's my link
http://suvadugalnizhalgalkanavugal.blogspot.com
BTW.. the discussion seems interesting.. mathavanga alavukku ennala alasa mudiyaathu.. etho ennala mudinjadhu.. adiyen pangukku..
வரை in the first line means 'unless' - a verse isn't beautiful unless it conveys meaning,
in 2nd line - 'till'
in 3rd line - 'so long as'
adhika-prasangi thanathuku mannikkanum.. :)
Ah.. Finally you came :)
And reg the song.. i get ur second and third lines.. but the first one seems counter-intuitive.. (or is it just me? dunno.. will revisit later :) )
Thanks for the so called adhiga prasangithanam :D machi, at one level, blog ezhudhuradhe comments-kaaga than.. no a.p.thanam in this!
Nice post King Vishy. First time here. Most of these song are on my list of must listen too, I like
"anbe sugama" lyrics from "paarthale paravasam" a lot. Nalla elutharinga, vaalthukkal!!
Deeksh
Hi Deekshanya..
Thanks for the visit.. and for the comment! :) Hope you keep visiting!
anbe sugama - love the song.. feel very peaceful and tranquil when I hear the song.. but as usual - havent noticed the lyrics ever :(
Whattey Lyrics ya !! :)
Half of Tendulkar's success is Tony Grieg. Vikram Sathaye once mimiced. A simple flick to the third man, Tony greig would hype it, "Into the fence she goes, Sachhhiinnn Tendulakrrr is the greatest batsman in the history of cricket".. Yea. Anyway, that was just a mimic. Even a muted straight drive of SRT would give me goosebumps every single time I watch it.
Well coming to the point. I see quite a few people are directed to my blog from this post. Read this post again this morning. I had an interesting thing to note. Half the success of a lyricist is the music director and vice-versa. Else we would all've been moving around with iPods playing "Instrumental music" with a 'Kavidhai" book in hand. Thats not the case.
Spot on. Thats exactly what am doing these days. Im my late twenties, meticulously building my iPod with Ilayaraja of the 70's and 80's. Soulful music but some awful lyrics.
Here too.
// 7 of these 12 songs are by Vairamuthu!!
2 each by Thamarai and Kannadaasan.. And 1 by Wall-e.. //
Ilayaraja - 5; ARR - 4; Harris - 1; Vidyasagar - 1; Vijay antony -1
Its almost 25 years now. That estranged Vairamuthu - IR Relation.
Pre-split - IR & Vairamuthu combo - 2/5
Post : ARR & Vairamuthu - 4/4
No mention of Ilayaraja after the rift. That pretty much sums up.
30 years now. Supposedly an Undisputuable (?!) king of Tamil music. But still NEPV is considered as an acid test. ARR was once in the same trap. Before VTV. But he had won it hands down. Like a T20 chase which ended in the fifth over.
NEPV. Lets see.
awesome post and pleasure to read the comments.
I would say vairamuthu's best is "வெள்ளை பூக்கள் உலகம் எங்கும் மலரட்டும்" and particularly one line..
second best is the one from the same movie. its less heard of.
it has the most beautiful lines,
last but not the least from Iruvar, the first love without any virasam,
உன்னோடு நான் இருந்த மணித்துளியும்!! it just lingers all over you.
Nice post anna! Congrats u ve started paying attention to lyrics :) If u follow this up diligently, i promise u, within a few months, u wont be in a position to write such a blog ever again.. there are so many excellent verses to write about that u cant keep pace with :) Cheers!
